Agriculture and livestock impacts on river floodplain wetlands: a study case from the lower Uruguay river Boletín de la Sociedad
Bena,María Julia; Sirolli,Horacio; Kalesnik,Fabio.
Even though wetlands are very valuable environments, they suffer heavy exploitation and transformation processes that affect their biodiversity. The main goal of this study was to characterize the herbaceous plant communities associated with the southern Uruguay River flood plain. We focused on lowlands of two farms, one of which is surrounded by an embankment to prevent flooding. A random stratified sampling was performed in 72 plots. To detect distribution patterns and plant species associations we performed a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and a Two-Way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). We could identify six groups of plots whose ordination patterns are related to the flooding preferences of dominant species. Herbaceous plant groups that...

Fator de condição gonadal, índice hepatossomático e recrutamento como indicadores do período de reprodução de Loricariichthys platymetopon (Osteichthyes, Loricariidae), bacia do rio Uruguai médio, sul do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Querol,Marcus Vinicius Morini; Querol,Enrique; Gomes,Nara Neide Adolpho.
The recruitment period of Locariichthys platymetopon (Isbrucker & Nijssen, 1979) was investigated. It has been found out, through the data analysis, that the gonadal condition factor is a good indicator of the reproductive period and that the hepatossomatic index is probably related to the storage of reservation for the winter period. The recruitment occurred in November coinciding with the reproductive activity of May.

The vast majority of fishermen in the region have fishing as their main source of income, being considered by the States as a group that hás weaknesses, mainly in access to public policies. The objective of this work was to characterize the profile and demands of artisanal fishermen from Uruguaiana and Barra do Quaraí, on the western border of Rio Grande do Sul, regarding the commercialization and processing of fish. The survey was obtained by the rapid participatory diagnosis (DRP) in two moments, one in each city. This article presents the main problems observed and raised by fishermen, as well as strategies for improving the...

Spatial and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the upper Uruguay river, Brazil BABT
Hermes-Silva,Samara; Reynalte-Tataje,David; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
The distribution and abundance of fish eggs and larvae was analyzed in three sections of the Upper Uruguay river, in a stretch of 290 km. Samples were collected monthly from October, 2001 to March, 2002 during 48-h cycles at 6-h intervals between each sampling. Surface and bottom samples were collected with a 0.5-mm mesh cylindroconical net. Fishes from the Upper Uruguay river were reproductively active mainly from October to January, and this activity was more intense at the Ligeiro and Chapecó tributaries and Chapecó main river. It was observed that the tributaries are important spawning grounds and larval nursery sites, indicating the importance of preserving such environments.
